TV Series Review – Luther (Idris Elba)

There are very few televisions shows that I watch these days.  Everything seems to have turned to reality  TV or find Americas’s next celebrity something.  Not interested.  I come from a home where my grandmother watched Columbo and Murder She Wrote.  We loved those shows, those were good times. We had to be in front of the TV at the same time every week.  It was great!  I used to watch Law and Order back in the day, but the writing and the acting are a waste of screen time these days.

Believe it or not there is actually a TV series that is worth parking your booty on the sofa to watch.  Luther is a  TV crime drama that airs on BBC One and BBC America.  Seasons  one and two can be found online, at Netflix and on DVD.  I understand season 3 is in production.

Idris Elba is a policeman for London’s Serious Crimes Unit. He is DCI (Detective Chief Inspector) John Luther aka DCI Luther. This character is extremely intelligent, intuitive and maniacally devoted to his belief in helping others through his work even if it means he has to allegedly kill someone to do it.  Hopelessly in love with his estranged wife, Luther cannot control his emotions or possessiveness that continually put him in difficult situations. The climatic finale of season one leaves you in shock, but there will be no doubt as to how much he loves his wife.

Idris Elba’s character and the writing for this show is truly impressive work.  I don’t believe I have ever seen a more conflicted and complex character than that of John Luther.  He is good and bad , violent and gentle, insane and insightful.  I love him and dislike him.  His interaction with the crime team is a mixture of believing his team a clear nuisance and alternately training them on the tricks of the trade.  No one on his team seems to totally trust him, and others out right suspect him of criminal acts.  Luther seems to be most at home interacting with the suspects he investigates.  Alice Morgan played by Ruth Wilson is Luther’s most beguiling suspect yet.  The interaction between the two is witty, funny, violently aggressive, and full of sexual tension. I at once, believe she is undeniably evil and yet I want John’s character to…like her.

Without a doubt Idris Elba OWN’s this show.  He wears it like a second skin.  The writers keep you twisting, turning and guessing with all the plot twists an turns.  It’s something I haven’t seen in a long time, a Good TV show! Watch it!
